Cleanness At Santiago Apostol Hospice. Jul-2010 Day-2

ON THE SECOND ACTIVITY DAY, MFUMC mission team members spent the whole day cleaning up the outside part of SANTIAGO APÓSTOL Hospice and painting the walls forming the perimeter. Sister Juanita, director of this institution, welcomed this cheerful bunch of people eager to serve others. The Hospice provides medical care to people diagnosed with terminal deseases who are dealing with the most difficult phase of the sickness making possible for them to go through this unwanted process with dignity until the last day of their lives. It also provides psychological and spiritual assistance to patients' relatives.

LIMPIEZA EN HOSPICIO APÓSTOL SANTIAGO. Jul-2010 Día-2

EN EL SEGUNDO DÍA DE ACTIVIDADES, el equipo misionero de MFUMC pasó el día limpiando el exterior del Hospicio SANTIAGO APÓSTOL y pintando las paredes del perímetro. La hermana Juanita, directora de ésta institución, dio la bienvenida a este animado grupo de personas deseosas de servir a los demás. El Hospicio provee cuidado médico a pacientes con enfermedades terminales que están enfrentando la etapa más difícil de la enfermedad haciendo posible que atraviesen éste proceso indeseado con dignidad hasta el último día de sus vidas. También provee apoyo psicológico y espiritual a los familiares de los pacientes.

Visiting Institutions Providing Community Services. Jul-2010 Day-1

ONE MORE TIME, a MFUMC mission team from Georgia-USA visited our city Chimbote to fulfill its community agenda which was set up by ABCD CHIMBOTE Project. This time activities included visit to some local institutions providing communities services and also involvement in a 2-day sport tournament at Bruces Polysport. The firts day, we met the Mayor of Nuevo Chimbote Dr. Valentín Fernández who say to us that Municipality will assist this sport event. Then, we went to Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish where we met father Jack Davis who invited us to a street tour during which he shared how his ministry started and services it offers to the needy.

In the afternoon we visited Hospital Regional Of Chimbote and after talking to the director and some administrative and health staff members about conditions in which health services are offered, water samples were taken in order to determine its quality and provide purifiers, if needed.

VISITA A INSTITUCIONES QUE PROVEEN SERVICIOS COMUNITARIOS. Jul-2010 Día-1

UNA VEZ MÁS, un equipo misionero de MFUMC de Georgia-USA visitó Chimbote para cumplir su agenda comunitaria definida por el Projecto ABCD CHIMBOTE. Ésta vez las actividades incluyeron visita a instituciones proveedoras de servicios comunitarios y participación en un torneo deportivo de dos días en el Polideportivo de Bruces. El primer día, nos reunimos con el alcalde de Nuevo Chimbote Dr. Valentín Fernández quien nos dijo que la Municipalidad apoyará este evento deportivo. Luego, nos dirigimos a la Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro donde nos reunimos con el padre Juan Davis quien nos invitó a un tour por las calles durante el cual nos compartió sobre el inicio de su misión y los servicios que ofrece a los necesitados.

En la tarde, visitamos el Hospital Regional de Chimbote y después de conversar con el director y personal administrativo y asistencial sobre la condiciones en que se ofrecen lo servicios de salud, se tomaron muestras de agua para determinar su calidad y proveer purificadores, si fuera necesario.

Building A Clinic Room: Roofing, Doors, Windows, Bathroom

AS YOU CAN SEE from my previous posts, I have been sharing information about the progress of the building of a multipurpose consultation room in a humble community "Las Delicias" in Nuevo Chimbote district here in Perú. We know the concrete slab, plywood walls and sewer network were already made. Now, I would like to say that it already has roof which is made of eternit fiberboard. Besides, the bathroom has been finished which contains a toilet, sink and its own door. It is working well but what it is needed is a water tank to store and provide water to the bathroom all the time. By now, it is being used only when the public network provides water and when it does not, people need to take water buckets.

On the other side, it already has its main door and the two glass windows have already put into place, in the plywood walls. There are only a few things left to be done/bought for the consultation room to be utterly finished (water tank, plywood panels for interior walls, painting); even so, it is already being used to provide community services in legal and psychological area. Physicians, nurses and other kind of professional are being invited to get involved. CONSTRUCCIÓN DE UN CONSULTORIO MÉDICO: TECHO, PUERTAS, VENTANAS, SERVICIOS HIGIÉNICOS

COMO PUEDEN VER, en mis previos posts he compartido información sobre el progreso de la construcción del consultorio multiuso ubicado en la comunidad "Las Delicias" del distrito de Nuevo Chimbote aquí en Perú. Sabemos que ya se han construído la plataforma de concreto, las paredes de paneles de fibra de madera y la red de desague. Ahora me gustaría compartir que el consultorio ya tiene su techo de eternit. Además, el baño en su interior está terminado el cual contiene un inodoro, lavador y puerta de madera. Está funcionando pero lo que se necesita es un tanque para proveer de agua al baño todo el tiempo. Por ahora, está siendo usado sólo cuando la red pública provee agua y cuando no, las personas deben llevar baldes con agua.

Por otro lado, el consultorio ya tiene su puerta principal y las dos ventanas de vidrio (sistema directo) han sido colocadas. Hay solo pocas cosas que quedan aún por hacer/comprar para que el consultorio multiuso quede completamente terminado (tanque de agua, paneles de fibra de madera para la pared interior, pintura); aún así, ya esta siendo usado para proveer servicios a la comunidad en el área psicológica y jurídica. Médicos, enfermeras y otros profesionales están siendo invitados a involucrarse a favor de los menos favorecidos. Building A Clinic Room: Setting The Walls and Sewer System

ON MY PREVIOUS POST I have shared information about the making of slab, which is part of the clinic room construction project. Now, I would like to share with you all on other actividades of the project that are being executed. As the times goes by, the clinic room is being completed little by little. At this point, I'm glad to say the walls were finished and the sewer system of the clinic room is already set. As you know, this project is possible thanks to coordination of ABCD CHIMBOTE non-profit and the support of Marietta First United Methodist Church (MFUMC) from GA-USA. It is expected the clinic room is done in only a few days and ready to be used to provide medical care to people who don't have enough resources to access this service.

CONSTRUCCIÓN DE UN CONSULTORIO MÉDICO: ELABORACIÓN DE LAS PAREDES Y EL SISTEMA DE ALCANTARILA

EN MI ANTERIOR POST he compartido información sobre la elaboración de la loza, la cual es parte del proyecto de construcción de un consultorio. Ahora, me gustaría compartir con ustedes sobre otras actividades del proyecto que están siendo ejecutadas. A medida que el tiempo pasa, el consultorio se está completando poco a poco. En este punto, me alegra decir que las paredes fueron terminadas y el sistema de desague, configurado. Como saben, este proyecto es posible gracias a las coordinaciones que hace la org. no gubernamental ABCD CHIMBOTE y al apoyo de la Primera Iglesia Metodista Unida de Marietta (MFUMC) de Georgia-USA. Se espera que el consultorio se termine de construir en estos días y esté listo para ser usado en la provisión de cuidado médico a las personas que no tienen suficientes recursos para acceder a este servicio.

Building A Clinic Room: Making The Slab

THE LOW ACCESS or no access to medical care is an important issue to consider especially when it comes to people living in humble communities. This reality is known by families of the new communities settled in the southern part of Nuevo Chimbote city here in Perú who need to be provided with health services. In order to addressing this social issue, the ABCD CHIMBOTE non-profit has made coordinations with Marietta First United Methodist Church (MFUMC) from GA-USA for this church to build a clinic room in an area inside of the facilities of Nueva Vida Church, located in Mz-17 Las Delicias neighborhood in Nuevo Chimbote, which was gently granted by its pastor Raul Meza to be used by international, national and local medical teams and by any health professsional interested in providing medical care to the less advantaged.

So, I am glad to share that some days ago the project for the clinic room construction has started. The first thing to build was the concrete slab on which the four wood walls will be put. Now that the concrete slab is finished we are going ahead to the next step of the project.

CONSTRUCCIÓN DE UN CONSULTORIO MÉDICO: ELABORACIÓN DE LA LOZA

EL BAJO ACCESO o falta de acceso al cuidado médico es un asunto muy importante a considerar, especialmente si se trata de personas que viven en comunidades humildes. Esta realidad es conocida por las familias de las nuevas comunidades ubicadas al sur de la ciudad de Nuevo Chimbote aquí en Perú quienes necesitan tener acceso a los servicios de salud. Con el propósito de abordar esta problemática social, la organización sin fines de lucro ABCD CHIMBOTE ha realizado coordinaciones con la Primera Iglesia Metodista Unida de Marietta (MFUMC) de Georgia-USA para la construcción de un consultorio médico en un área dentro de las instalaciones de la Iglesia NUEVA VIDA ubicada en el AA.HH. Las Delicias M-17, Nuevo Chimbote, la cual fue gentilmente cedida por su líder, el pastor Raul Meza, para ser usado por equipos médicos internacionales, nacionales y locales y por cualquier profesional de la salud interesado en proveer cuidado médico a los menos favorecidos.

Me alegra compartir que hace unos días ha empezado a ejecutarse el proyecto de construcción del consultorio médico. Lo primero a construir fue la loza de concreto sobre la cual descanzarán las 4 paredes de madera. Ahora que ya está terminada la loza de concreto, seguimos adelante con el siguiente paso del proyecto.

Chocolate Party By Prevention Program Members

After we held the third session of the Prevention Program and taking advantage of the Christmas season, I shared with young people, whom we support, the idea to set up a Chocolate Party for children. It really was a big challenge because we had no resource at all for that. On this situaion, what I did was basicly to ignite the spark of enthusiasm and passion inside of them by telling them we can do it if we really focus on it and do our best to get it. They all agreed and the first step was to elect democratically the board made up exclusively by the beneficiaries of the program to be in charge of this initiative. They all committed to get, as a donation, what was needed. Well, at this point I would like recognize the great efforts of Sulay and Santos, owners of the house we meet in, because they did a great work in getting donations and providing speakers for music.

Our gratitude to the program beneficiaries for going to a carpentry to ask for sawdust to make a stove to prepare chocolate and being very active throughout the event. Also, they provided show through some girls and a clown. We facilitators got involved as well, and so, special thanks to Samuel Huerta who together with some of his classmates of the university they study at, could get important donations. We really appreciate their great efforts guys.

Heartfelt thanks to Jhosymar Garcia (for getting songs, being the DJ and staying up late the night before the event to set up sound system) and Eduardo Pastor (for taking care of every detail of the event). Thanks God everything turned out fine and children spent a happy time and got presents even a provision basket was raffled among attendance. After the event was over we had a meeting in which beneficiaries realized they can do what they propose, even though circumstances are adverse.

CHOCOLATADA REALIZADA POR JÓVENES DEL PROGRAMA DE PREVENCIÓN

Después de realizar la tercera sesión del Programa de Prevención y aprovechando la temporada navideña, compartí con los jóvenes, a quienes apoyamos, la idea de realizar una chocolatada. Fue un gran reto porque no teníamos los recursos. Ante esta situación lo que hice fue encender la chispa del entusiasmo y la pasión dentro de ellos diciéndoles que podemos hacerlo si nos centramos en ello y hacemos todo lo posible para lograrlo. Todos estuvieron de acuerdo y el primer paso fue elegir democráticamente la junta directiva formada exclusivamente por los beneficiarios del programa para que estén a cargo de esta iniciativa. Todos se comprometieron a conseguir, en calidad de donación, lo que se necesitaba. Bueno, en este punto, me gustaría reconocer el gran esfuerzo de Sulay y Santos, dueños de la casa donde nos reunimos, ya que hicieron un gran trabajo en conseguir donaciones y proporcionar el equipo de sonido.

Nuestro agradecimiento a los jóvenes beneficiarios por ir a una carpintería a solicitar aserrín para hacer una cocina improvisada para preparar chocolate y por estar muy activos durante el desarrollo de todo el evento. Asimismo, proporcionaron el show infantil a través de un grupo de niñas y un payaso. Nosotros los facilitadores también nos involucramos y de esta forma, un agradecimiento especial a Samuel Huerta quien junto con algunas de sus compañeros de la universidad donde estudian, pudieron conseguir importantes donaciones. Realmente apreciamos su gran esfuerzo chicos.

Gracias de corazón a Jhosymar García (por conseguir las canciones, por ser el DJ y por permanecer hasta tarde la noche previa al evento preparando el equipo de sonido) y a Eduardo Pastor (por preocuparse de cada detalle del evento). Gracias a Dios todo salió bien y los niños pasaron un tiempo feliz y recibieron regalos, incluso se sorteó una canasta de víveres entre los asistentes. Terminado el evento, tuvimos una reunión con los jóvenes del programa en la cual agradecí su participacíon y al mismo tiempo se dieron cuenta que pueden hacer lo que se proponen, a pesar que las circunstancias sean adversas.

Session III - Prevention And Addressing Program For Youth

After having carried out the second session of the program, now I would like to share with you on the third one which took place on Thursday December 19th, 2013. We all know that one effective way to set up a healthy self-steem is by saying positive and encouraging words to the person, in a loving environment, specially in childhood. We believe that never is too late so in this session, after watching a motivational video, we addressed the self-steem issue and through a dynamic game we focused on writing, on a paper stuck on back of participants, positive and encouraging words about each of them. We made it by making up couples, two people at the same time and after a little while new couples were formed to continue the game.

We all participated in this activity. Nobody knew what other people wrote on the paper. Participants confessed that are not used to do this (writing, saying or hearing good things about people) but, even so, did their best. After some guidelines were given they timidly started writing on the paper and at the end all did it well. Then, I told everyone to move forward to the front, one by one, in order to read louder what was written on the paper. They felt sort of ashamed at first. Most of them said this is the first time somebody said good things about them and they all felt alright. After hearing comments about it we shared some snacks.

Heartfelt thanks to my classmates Eduardo Pastor and Jhosymar García for their priceless support. Special gratitude also to Samuel Huerta for providing multimedia equipment and Santos and Sulay for letting use use their house.

SESIÓN III - PROGRAMA DE PREVENCIÓN Y ABORDAJE PARA JÓVENES

Después de haber realizado la segunda sesión del programa, ahora me gustaría compartir con ustedes sobre la tercera reunión la cual se llevó a cabo el jueves 19 de diciembre 2013. Todos sabemos que una manera eficaz de configurar una autoestima saludable es expresando palabras positivas y alentadoras a la persona, en un ambiente de amor, especialmente en la infancia. Creemos que nunca es demasiado tarde, asi que en esta sesión, después de ver un video motivacional, abordamos la cuestión de la autoestima y por medio de un juego dinámico nos centramos en escribir, en un papel pegado en la espalda de cada participante, palabras positivas y alentadoras sobre cada uno de ellos. Lo hicimos en parejas, dos personas al mismo tiempo y después de un momento se formaron nuevas parejas y de esta forma la dinámica continuó.

Todos participamos en esta actividad. Nadie sabía lo que se escribía en el papel. Los participantes confesaron que no están acostumbrados a hacer esto (escribir, decir o escuchar cosas buenas acerca de las personas) pero, aun así, hicieron su mejor esfuerzo. Después de compartir las reglas, tímidamente empezaron a escribir en el papel y al final lo hicieron bien. Luego, les pedí que se acercaran al frente, uno por uno, con el fin de leer en voz alta lo que estaba escrito en el papel. Al principio se sintieron un poco avergonzados pues la mayoría de ellos dijo que es la primera vez que alguien decía cosas buenas sobre ellos y todos se sintieron bien. Después de escuchar los comentarios sobre la experiencia, compartimos snacks.

Gracias de todo corazón a mis compañeros de estudio Eduardo Pastor y Jhosymar García por su invaluable apoyo. Un agradecimiento especial a Samuel Huerta por facilitarnos el equipo multimedia y a Santos y Sulay por permitirnos el uso de su casa.
