Pollution by Garbage Accumulation

Garbage accumulation in the environment and informal dumps in Chimbote is a matter that goes beyond foul odor. It is a big problem of environmental pollution that affects the whole residentes of the city, mainly the poorest. It is known that 76% of Peru's Municipalities, including Chimbote's, neither promote classification of solid waste nor separate hazardous waste. Presently, there has been an increase in solid waste because of:

  • Population increase.
  • Inadequate consumption habits.
  • Precarious environmental education.
  • Disordered migration.
  • Unsustainable trade flows, and
  • Incorrect waste management by municipalities.

In that sense, it is concluded that 98% of municipalities throw out garbage, that they collect, in inappropriate places causing air pollution, soil, water. This allows the reproduction of insects and other animals transmitting serious infectious diseases.

Chimbote environment has been severely affected by the irresponsible manufacturing activity and the population explosion. Tha bay is polluted and the city has been taking lands in the wetlands in Chimbote causing their reduction. Currently, they are performing studies for planning a recovery program in the Bay of Chimbote, once called "The Pearl of the Pacific"
