Planning to Purify Water For Children at a School

San José Elementary School is an educational center providing education to 60 children living in a small village called San José located in countryside, at outskirts of Chimbote, about 15 minutes away from downtown. Unfortunately, the children can not drink water of school since it is unclean and because of that they themselves have to carry their own water provision. There is a cistern at school and the water is pumped, in a regular basis, from there up to a tank placed on the roof of a classroom. Unclean water is used for other purposes, so far.

So, given this reality, the Marietta First United Methodist Church (MFUMC) from Georgia-USA, through its Program Department whose leaders are Forrest Cate and Brian McNair, is planning to donate and install a water purifier device to the school for the children to be able to safely drink clean water. A MFUMC mission team will come down to Chimbote the first week of December to accomplish this goal and also perform other activities, among them a medical campaign.

PLANEANDO PURIFICAR AGUA PARA LOS NIÑOS DE UN COLEGIO

La Escuela Primaria San José es un centro educativo que provee educación a 60 niños que viven en el pequeño Centro Poblado San José ubicado en una zona rural, a las afueras de Chimbote a 15 minutos del centro de la ciudad. Desafortunadamente, los niños no pueden beber el agua del colegio ya que no es pura por lo que ellos mismos tienen que llevar su propia provisión de agua. Hay una cisterna en el colegio y el agua se bombea, de manera periódica, desde allí hasta un tanque en el techo de un salón de clase. El agua impura se usa para otros propósitos, hasta ahora.

Ante esta realidad, la Primera Iglesia Metodista Unida de Marietta (MFUMC), Georgia-USA, a través de su Departamento de Programas cuyos líderes son Forrest Cate y Brian McNair, está planeando donar e instalar un purificador de agua al colegio para que los niños puedad beber el agua de manera segura. Un equipo misionero vendrá a Chimbote la primera semana de diciembre para cumplir este propósito y realizar otras actividades, entre ellas una campaña médica.

Clean Water Is Needed In a School

About 20 minutes away east of Nuevo Chimbote city it is located Tangay, a rural area whose population is mostly engaged in agriculture, livestock and cultivation of fruit trees. In Tangay it is found the Governmental Educational Institution Nro 88218 "Tangay Medio", a school providing education to children and teens in three levels: Kindergarten, elementary and highschool whose principal is Mr. Edgar Bueza. Even though there is a cistern at school, a pump and two tanks on the roof, unfortunately it has no water supply that's why students themselves have to carry their own water supply to school by bottle, etc.

About 100 meters from the school, in front of it, there is an irrigation channel; so, in order to take advantage of the water running on it the school staff and family parents made an ​​effort to construct a cistern next to the irrigation channel which is fed by a pipe. This is the current condition of the school regarding water: A cistern with no cover outside school containing unclean water exposed to more contamination. Some children drink this water.

On the other hand, the priest of the Catholic Church of Tangay, Fr. Leonardo from Italy, has committed to construct the cistern cover and also make possible the water transfer from the cistern to the main tank in the school through underground pipes and a pump, which already has the school. The work will start very soon and only take some days, at most. This way the school will be provided with water, but, unclean water.

So, to address this important issue the Marietta First United Methodist Church (MFUMC) from Georgia-USA, through its Program Department whose leaders are Forrest Cate and Brian McNair, is planning to donate a water purifier device to the school so that the students are able to drink clean water. A MFUMC mission team will come down to Chimbote the first week of December to accomplish this goal and also perform other activities.

COLEGIO NECESITA CONTAR CON AGUA LIMPIA

A 20 min. al este de la ciudad de Nuevo Chimbote se encuentra el centro poblado Tangay, una zona rural cuya población se dedida a la agricultura, ganadería y cultivo de árboles frutales. En Tangay se ubica la Institución Educativa Pública Nro 88218 "Tangay Medio", un colegio que brinda educación a los niños y adolescentes de la zona en los niveles de Inicial, Primaria y Secundaria cuyo director es el Sr. Edgar Bueza. Aunque en el colegio hay un cisterna, una bomba y dos tanques en el techo, desafortunadamente no cuenta con provisión de agua razón por la cual los mismos estudiantes tienen que llevar su propia provisión de agua al colegio ya sea en botella, etc.

A 100 mts. de la frontera del colegio hay un canal de irrigación; por lo tanto, para aprovechar el agua del canal el personal del colegio y los padres de familia hicieron un esfuerzo para construir una cisterna al lado del canal el cual es alimentado a través de una tubería. Esta es la condición actual del colegio respecto del agua: Una cisterna sin cubierta fuera del colegio que contiene agua no apta para el consumo humano expuesta incluso a una mayor contaminación. Algunos niños beben esta agua.

Por otro lado, el sacerdote de la iglesia católica de Tangay, Rev. Leonardo de Italia, se ha comprometido a construir la cubierta de la cisterna y también a hacer posible el traslado del agua desde la cisterna hasta el tanque principal ubicado en el colegio a través de tubos bajo tierra y una bomba, que ya tiene el colegio. La obra empezará muy pronto y sólo tomará algunos días, a lo sumo. De esta manera el colegio contará con agua, pero, agua no apta para el consumo humano.

Para abordar este asunto importante la Primera Iglesia Metodista Unida de Marietta (MFUMC) de Georgia-USA, a través de su Departamento de Programas cuyos líderes son Forrest Cate y Brian McNair, está planeando donar un dispositivo purificador de agua al colegio para que los estudiantes puedad beber agua limpia. Un equipo de misiones de MFUMC vendrá a Chimbote la primera semana de diciembre para cumplir con este propósito y también a realizar otras actividades.

Micro Lending: Story 6

At her beautician room

Her name is Carmen Dora Álvarez Villalta and is 42 years old. She is married to 53-year-old Luis Alberto Espinoza Yamunaquí and both have two daughters: 23-year-old Juliana and 16-year-old Brigit. They live at A-11 Ramal Playa community, here in Chimbote. Well, many years ago things were not going well in the family economically speaking. For this reason, she traveled to Argentina to work and send money to her family. Unfortunately things did not turn out as she wanted to. So, in 2002 she decided to get back to Perú. Once here she volunteered to the Perpetual Help parish where Fr. Jack Davis is the priest. She was taking care of the disabled. This helped her to find some inner quietness.

She was very dedicated as volunteer and because of that ACAF Civil Association supported her in her efforts to improve her house roof. She was also a recipient of one of the soup kitchens of the parish. As the time went by, she continued to work for the parish doing several things such as pool controller at Corazón de Jesús parish, cleaning personnel, clothes washing, etc. and she was paid for that. This meant an income for her family. She did her best to start a small business at 10 de Setiembre market selling fruit juice, cosmetics, etc. She wanted to improve her business.

So she went to visit ACAF's Social Service Office and talk to one of the social workers, Mrs. Gudi, who referred her to Micro Lending program of CHOI in order to apply for a micro loan. The program approved her application and so she received her FIRST micro loan on October 19, 2006. She used this money to set up a soda fountain businees. She also bought a sandwich cart to sell sandwiches. She wanted to expand her business and applied for a new micro loan. She received her SECOND micro lending on November 29, 2007. She used the money to start selling clothing and shoes which she brought from Lima.

She punctually repayed her lending and so she received her THIRD micro loan on May 30, 2008. She used the money to improve the sale of clothing and shoes. She surprisinlgy repayed her debt in only four months. She received her FOURTH micro loan on October 29, 2008. She used the money to set up a phone call center, to sell recharging cards, drinks, beer, candy, etc. She also expanded her business of selling clothing and shoes. As a good customer of CHOI's Micro Lending program she received her FIFTH micro loan on August 29, 2009. She used the money to improve her entire business.

She received her SIXTH micro loan on May 26, 2010. She used the money even to continue to improve her whole business. At the same time she started studying cosmetology at the technical career program of CHOI. She received her SEVENTH micro loan on April 30, 2011. She used half of the money to build her house and the other half to keep improving her business and to buy two multigame machines. At the end of 2011, she rented a stand (stand 13) at "Plaza Center" Chimbote Shopping Center located in Tumbes street, Chimbote in which she set up a beautician room and sells beauty products.

She received her EIGHTH micro loan on January 31, 2012. She used the money to continue to improve her entire business and also to buy three more multigame machines. She is very thankful to CHOI's Micro Lending program. These are her own words: "The program is a great support for those entrepreneurs wanting to go forward by setting up her/his small business. They support me, then, I support others. The program helped me to emerge and to get into the business world despite bad times. I strongly belive I can succeed in my own country."

Jack Davis es el sacerdote. Allí, estuvo cuidando de los discapacitados. Esto le ayudó a encontrar algo de paz interior.

Como voluntaria, ella era muy dedicada y debido a eso la Asociación Civil ACAF la apoyó en sus esfuerzos de mejorar el techo de su casa. En ese entonces también fue beneficiaria de uno de los comedores de la parroquia. A medida que el tiempo pasaba, ella seguía trabajando en la parroquia haciendo varias cosas como controlar la piscina de la parroquia Corazón de Jesús, limpieza de ambientes, lavado de ropa, etc. servicios por los cuales se la empezó a pagar. Esto significaba un ingreso para su familia. También se esforzó para empezar un pequeño negocio en el mercado 10 de Setiembre vendiendo jugo de fruta, cosméticos, etc. Ella quería mejorar su negocio.

Ella pagaba puntualmente sus cuotas mensuales y así recibió su TERCER préstamo el 30 de mayo del 2008. Usó el dinero para mejorar la venta de ropa y calzados. Sorprendentemente pagó todo su préstamo en sólo 4 meses. Recibió su CUARTO préstamo el 29 de octubre del 2008. Usó el dinero para iniciar el negocio de llamadas telefónicas, venta de tarjetas de recarga, bebidas, golosinas, etc. También expandió su negocio de venta de ropa y calzados. Como buena cliente del programa de Micro Préstamo de CHOI recibió su QUINTO préstamo el 29 de agosto del 2009. Usó el dinero para mejorar todo su negocio.

Recibió su SEXTO préstamo el 26 de mayo del 2010 lo cual permitió seguir mejorando todo su negocio. Al mismo tiempo empezó a estudiar cosmetología en el programa de Carreras Técnicas de CHOI. Recibió su SÉPTIMO préstamo el 30 de abril del 2011. Usó la mitad del dimero para construír su casa y la otra mitad para seguir mejorando su negocio existente. También compró 2 máquinas multijuegos. A finales del año 2011, rentó un stand (stand 13) en el Centro Comercial Chimbote "Plaza Center" ubicado en la calle Tumbes en Chimbote en donde ella estableció un salón de belleza e inició la venta de productos de belleza.

Recibió su OCTAVO préstamo el 31 de enero del 2012 lo cual usó para seguir mejorando todo su negocio y también para comprar tres máquinas multijuegos más. Ella está muy agradecida con el programa de Micro Préstamo. Estas son sus propias palabras: "El programa es una gran oportunidad para los emprendedores que desean seguir adelante organizando su propio negocio. Ellos me apoyan, y luego, yo apoyo a otros. El programa me ayudó a surgir y a entrar en el mundo de los negocios a pesar de los malos tiempos. Creo firmemente que puedo tener éxito en mi propio país."

Providing Medical Care in the Highland of Ancash-Perú. Dic-2011

AFTER the medical campaign in San Luis Polyclinic was over, medicines which remained over were donated to the polyclinic for health professionals, headed by Dr. Alberto Sifuentes, to prescribe them and hand them out for free among the most needy patients. A few days later, the polyclinic participated in community activities in CARAP, a small village located in the Highland of Ancash about 2 hours away from Chimbote. Activities included madical campaign, fluoridation for children, child show, games and distribution of presents for children. Medicines were given out there.

At this event also participated the staff of a Chimbote radio station "SANTO DOMINGO", SAN PEDRO University and volunteers who set up and led the non-medical part of activities with children.

CAMPAÑA MÉDICA EN LA SIERRA DE ANCASH-PERÚ. Dic-2011

TERMINADA la campaña médica en el Policlínico San Luis, las medicinas sobrantes fueron donadas al policlínico para que los profesionales de la salud, encabezados por el Dr. Alberto Sifuentes, los prescriban y entreguen gratuitamente entre los pacientes más necesitados. Unos días después, el policlínico participó en actividades comunitarias en CARAP, un pequeño pueblito ubicado en la sierra de Ancash a dos horas de Chimbote. La actividades incluyeron una campaña médica, fluorización, show infantil, juegos y distribución de regalos para niños. Las medicinas fueron repartidas allí.

En éste evento también participaron los trabajadores de una estación de radio de Chimbote "SANTO DOMINGO", Universidad SAN PEDRO y voluntarios, quienes organizaron y dirigieron la parte no médica de las actividades con los niños.

More Community Activities. Nov-2011 Day-4

YESTERDAY WAS the last medical campaign day held in San Luis Polyclinic. We are very thankful because everything went well. Today, we took some time to visit a very poor family living in poverty extreme conditions to see what way we can help. Then, we went to Cristo Redentor school to finish a water purifier installation which will make possible students will be provided with clean water. At this point and on behalf of ABCD CHIMBOTE Project, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the MFUMC mission team from USA for making possible the medical campaign and the other community activities we performed together in Chimbote and Nuevo Chimbote.

Let's keep doing the good work.

Luego, regresamos al colegio Cristo Redentor a terminar de instalar el purificador de agua el cual permitirá que los estudiantes puedan consumir agua purificada. En este punto y a nombre del Proyecto ABCD CHIMBOTE, me gustaría expresar mi más sincero agradecimiento al equipo de misiones de MFUMC de USA que hicieron posible la campaña médica y las demás actividades comunitarias en Chimbote y Nuevo Chimbote.

Medical Campaign and Other Community Activities. Nov-2011 Day-3

THIS DAY was the third and last day of medical campaign. In the morning, some members of the MFUMC mission team stayed at the San Luis Polyclinic facilities helping out in this medical event and the others participated in activities with children at Cristo Redentor school performing Sunday School and then playing games. We deeply appreciate grateful words patients said to MFUMC team members. In the afternoon we went to visit a Soup Kitchen in Chimbote where a water purifier was installed previously. At night, we participated at a church service where pastor Erick Mays, one of MFUMC pastors, preached.

We are very thankful to San Pedro University Medicine School authorities, polyclinic staff and people that, one way or another, helped us to hold this medical activity.

ÉSTE DÍA fue el tercer y último día de campaña médica. En la mañana, algunos miembros del equipo misionero de MFUMC permanecieron en las instalaciones del Policlínico San Luis apoyando este evento médico y los demás participaron en las actividades con niños en el colegio Cristo Redentor realizando la Escuela Dominical y luego actividades recreativas. Apreciamos profundamente las palabras de gratitud que los pacientes expresaron a los miembros del equipo de MFUMC. En la tarde, fuimos a visitar un comedor popular en Chimbote donde previamente se instaló un purificador de agua. En la noche, participamos en un servicio donde el pastor Erick Mays, uno de los pastores de MFUMC, predicó.

Estamos muy agradecidos con las autoridades de la facultad de Medicina Humana de la Universidad San Pedro, el quipo de trabajo del Policlínico y las personas que, de una u otra manera, nos ayudaron a realizar ésta campaña médica.

Medical Campaign and Other Community Activities. Nov-2011 Day-2

THIS IS INFORMATION of the second day of medical campaign held in San Luis Polyclinic of San Pedro University in Nuevo Chimbote. Medical professionals, in several specialties, continued attending people who got this place for medical care. On the other hand, it is worth noting that a young lady who is a MFUMC member made a great effort to collected clothes in her country and bring them to Chimbote to give them away among those who really need them. So, clothes were donated among patients attending medical campaign and humble people of a parish.

We also performed another Bible school for children in a local church in Primero de Mayo neighborhood we spent a nice time with learning, singing, playing, etc. We were pleased to keep serving our friends of these communities.

CAMPAÑA MÉDICA Y OTRAS ACTIVIDADES COMMUNITARIAS. Nov-2011 DÍA-2

ÉSTA INFORMACIÓN corresponde al segundo día de la campaña médica que se realizó en el Policlínico de la Universidad San Pedro en Nuevo Chimbote. Los profesionales de la salud, de varias especialidades, siguieron atendiendo a las personas que llegaban a este lugar buscando atención médica. Por otro lado, es oportuno resaltar que una joven, miembro de la iglesia MFUMC, hizo grandes esfuerzos para conseguir ropa donada en su país y traerlo a Chimbote para obsequiarlo entre aquellos que realmente lo necesitan. De ese modo, la ropa fue repartida entre los pacientes que asisitieron a la campaña médica y gente humilde de una parroquia.

También realizamos otra Escuelita Bíblica para niños en una iglesia local en el Pueblo Joven Primero de Mayo con quienes pasamos un buen tiempo aprendiendo, cantando, jugando, etc. Estuvimos complacidos de servir a nuestros amigos de éstas comunidades.

Medical Campaign at San Pedro University Polyclinic and Other Activities. Nov-2011 Day-1

IN ORDER TO PROVIDE medical care and meds for free to people living in humble communities in Nuevo Chimbote, Marietta First United Methodist Church (MFUMC) from Georgia-USA and ABCD CHIMBOTE Project started making plans about it. This is the first Medical Campaign these two organizations set up together to benefit people of that area. After conversations between the leader of ABCD CHIMBOTE and the director of San Pedro University polyclinic Dr. Aberto Sifuentes, we were allowed to use its facilities for such aim. This polyclinic is located near communities that have been organized lately south Nuevo Chimbote.

Here are medical services were provided:

• General Medicine.
• Gynecology-Obstetrics.
• Odontology.
• Nursing.
• Psychology.
• Physical Therapy.
• Laboratory.
• Pharmacy (meds for free).

We also visited Cristo Redentor school and started installing a water purifier there. In the afternoon we held a Bible School for children in Nueva Vida Church. This first day was a busy one and full of expectations. We are grateful for having this opportunity to serve those in need.

CAMPAÑA MÉDICA EN POLICLÍNICO DE LA UNIVERSIDAD SAN PEDRO Y OTRAS ACTIVIDADES. Nov-2011 DÍA-1

CON EL PROPÓSITO de ofrecer servicios médicos y medicinas completamente gratis a las personas que viven en las comunidades humildes de Nuevo Chimbote, la Primera Iglesia Metodista Unida de Marietta (MFUMC) de Georgia-USA y el Proyecto ABCD CHIMBOTE empezaron a hacer planes al respecto. Ésta es la primera campaña médica que éstas dos organizaciones realizan para beneficiar a las personas de esa área. Después de las conversaciones entre el líder de ABCD CHIMBOTE y el director del Policlínico Docente "San Luis" de la Universidad SAN PEDRO, Dr. ALberto Sifuentes, se nos permitió usar dichas instalaciones para tal fin. El policlínico está ubicado cerca a las comunidades que se han formado ultimamente al sur de Nuevo Chimbote.

Se ofrecieron los siguientes servicios médicos:

• Medicina General.
• Gíneco-Obstetricia.
• Odontología.
• Enfermería.
• Psicología.
• Terapia Física.
• Laboratorio.
• Farmacia (medicina gratis).

También visitamos el colegio Cristo Redentor donde se empezó a instalar un purificador de agua y en la tarde se realizó una escuelita bíblica para niños. Éste primer día fue uno muy ocupado y lleno de espectativas. Estamos agradecidos por tener la oportunidad de servir a aquellos que lo necesitan.

10th Anniversary Of The "Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow" Scholarship Program

We have just finished the tenth year of our Dollars For Scholars and Leaders For Tomorrow scholarship program in Chimbote, Peru! The program is sponsored by Chanhassen and Chimbote Rotary Clubs and has had 149 students in university and technical schools in Chimbote and 39 graduates including 10 who have just finished their studies and will graduate in January. In our annual survey of graduates’ employment, 65% were working which is very good considering the high degree of unemployment in Chimbote. We currently have 25 students in our Pre-University Academy preparing for the admissions exams and anticipate that 16 will begin school in April with 54 returning students. Our budget is $35,000, or $500 per student, and we have received cash or commitments of about $30,000, including expected proceeds from a fund raiser that is being sponsored by South Metro Minneapolis Evenings Rotary Club.

In addition to being U.S. fund raiser for the Dollars For Scholars program, I am also on the executive team and board of Friends of Chimbote -a U.S. 501 c 3 organization that raises funds to serve the poor of Chimbote- and chair of their Economic Opportunity Council whose transformational programs are delivered through Chimbote Oportunidades Ilimitadas (CHOI), a non-profit Peruvian civil association. CHOI administers the Dollars For Scholars program and also has a Vocational Training program with 80 students and a Micro Lending program serving 240 small business entrepreneurs.

I would welcome the opportunity to visit your club and give your members an update on Dollars For Scholars and our other programs to give the poor of Chimbote the opportunity to escape the abject poverty in which they live.

¡Acabamos de finalizar el décimo año de nuestro programa becario Dólares para Escolares y Líderes del Mañana en Chimbote, Perú! El programa es patrocinado por los Clubes Rotarios de Chanhassen y Chimbote y ha tenido 149 estudiantes en la universidad y escuelas técnicas de Chimbote y 39 graduados, incluyendo los 10 que acaban de terminar sus estudios y se graduarán en enero. En nuestro análisis anual de graduados con empleo, 65% estuvieron trabajando lo cual es muy bueno considerando el alto grado de desempleo en Chimbote. Estoy enviando este email a los presidentes de los Clubes que nos han apoyado y espero que extiendan nuestro agradecimiento a todos sus miembros.

Actualmente tenemos 25 estudiantes en nuestra Academia Pre-Universitaria preparándose para los exámenes de admisión y anticipamos que 16 empezarán sus estudios en abril con 54 estudiantes que regresan. Nuestro presupuesto es de $35,000 o $500 por estudiante, y hemos recibido dinero en efectivo o compromisos de aproximadamente $30,000, incluyendo ingresos esperados de un evento de recaudación de fondos que está siendo patrocinado por el Club Rotario South Metro Minneapolis Evenings.

En adición a ser el encargado de conseguir los fondos en USA para el programa Dólares para Escolares, también estoy en el equipo ejecutivo y en la junta directiva de Los Amigos de Chimbote -una organización americana de nivel 501c3 que recauda fondos para servir a los pobres de Chimbote- y soy presidente de su Concejo de Oportunidades Económicas cuyos programas de transformación son ofrecidos a través de Chimbote Oportunidades Ilimitadas (CHOI), una asociación civil peruana sin fines de lucro. CHOI administra el programa Dólares para Escolares y también tiene un programa de Formación Profesional con 80 estudiantes y un programa de Micro Préstamo que sirve a 240 emprendedores en pequeños negocios.

Me gustaría tener la oportunidad de visitar su club y dar a sus miembros más información sobre Dólares para Escolares y otros de nuestros programas para dar a los pobres de Chimbote la oportunidad de escapar de la pobreza extrema en que viven.
